The Birds of the Banc d'Arguin
On the thirtieth anniversary of the Banc d'Arguin National Park and twentieth anniversary of the International Foundation for the Banc d'arguin (FIBA), this book aims to provide an overview of the knowledge about the birds of the Banc d'Arguin in Mauritania which has been built up over nearly 50 years. This extraordinary site, whose tremendous natural value was revealed to science in 1959 by R.de Naurois, is at one and the same time the foremost wintering ground for wading birds and the largest breeding area for colonial waterbirds in all of West Africa. Some 300 bird species have been recorded here (as of january 2006).
This book includes an annotated checklist of the these species with notes on their status in space and time, and a detailed account of the 25,000 to 50,000 pairs of nesting colonial birds and 2,000,000 wintering waders. It is essential that this highly remarkable site be preserved, in the interest of all humankind.
